Running week of June 13-19

This was a tough week for my legs as I think the different kinds of workouts are fatiguing me a little more.  Maybe my body got used to redundant similar pace runs and not too used to track sprints and hill work.  I trust the marathon program I’m using but maybe this extra fatigue is supposed to happen.  My knees just seem to hurt a little more than they’ve ever felt before.  I’m realizing that my body isn’t 20 years old anymore and ice has been my best friend…

Monday June 13
Another attempt at running hard and fast while on duty at the firehouse.  It’s never easy and most times I have to stop to go on an emergency call.  I still don’t give up and ran 5 miles at 8 minutes 42 seconds average.

Tuesday June 14
Tonight was all about track work.  I went to the local high school about a mile away and hit the open track for marathon training day 9.  I ran the following intervals:
600 meters at 10k pace
500 meters at 10k pace400 meters at 5k pace
300 meters at 5k pace
200 meters at 5k pace
100 meter sprint
then reverse order
It felt pretty good to run that fast and had a 7 minute 53 second average for a total of 2.59 miles.  The weather was pretty hot and sticky and I know I sweat out more than I took in.  My legs were a little sore at night.  Tomorrow is supposed to be a rest day but maybe I’ll mountain bike.

Wednesday June 15
REST DAY

Thursday June 16
On duty for some Speed/Strengthwork.  My training plan called for a 1 mile tempo run which I did at 6.3 on the treadmill.  Then I did 800 meters x 2 at 6.3.  Next was 800 meters at 6.5 followed up my 2 more 80 meters at 6.3.  It wasn’t very difficult but I understand the program and what it is building.

Friday June 17
REST DAY

Saturday June 18
I was supposed to wake up early and hit the road before the heat was intense but of course, I slept through my alarm.  So awake and out the door around 9am and it was already brutal out.  I drank enough water to get me started on the trails but half way through I had to stop at the water fountain to top off!  I ran 8 miles at 9 minutes and 8 seconds average and it felt okay.  It wasn’t the greatest because of the heat.  It did teach me to get up early and beat that stinking fire weather.

Sunday June 19
REST DAY – but I did walk on the treadmill for a while and used that foam roller to stretch out.

  1. The only time I ever experience any kind of knee pain is when it is time to switch to new shoes and the old ones have too many miles. As soon as I do that the pain is gone the next day!

    When’s your next race?

    • I have one at the end of July (5k) and then followed by a few 1/2s before the Chicago Marathon. I thought shoes as well or maybe I’m just old!
